The Nencki Institute is the largest non-university, biological research centre in Poland employing 231 researchers and 116 PhD students and has funding in excess of 47 mln PLN in 2008. The Institute has a long and established tradition of internationally recognized research in the field of neuroscience, including eminent researchers such as Konorski, and since 1928 has published the quarterly international peer-reviewed journal Acta Neurobiologiae Experimentalis. Realization of the PhD projects outlined below will enable critical areas of basic and applied neurobiology research to be advanced, essential to ultimately improve human health. The Nencki Institute is a suitable place to implement the ambitious projects outlined in this proposal, with a strong track-record of effective and successful implementation of large research projects in the neuroscience domain, demonstrated by the recent establishment of the EU Centre of Excellence in Neurobiology BRAINS (Bringing Research Advances In Neurobiology to Society) and National Centre of Excellence MIND (Mózg I Nowe Drogi terapii). Additionally, the Institute currently participates in 11 European Framework Programs in the field of neuroscience.
