Background:
In mammals, the maturation of the visual system continues postnatally under the influence of visual experience. Abnormal vision, for example due to monocular or binocular deprivation, induces structural reorganizations at every processing level in the visual system: retina, subcortical nuclei (dorsal lateral geniculate and superior colliculus), and visual cortex. The existence of separate time periods for achieving distinct visual modalities has been examined during the normal development of the mammalian visual system. Our recent investigations suggest the existence of a discrete critical period for motion perception.
Aim of the study:
The goal of this project is to examine motion-sensitive critical period by complementing ongoing behavioural research with neuro-anatomical and neuro-physiological characterization of retinal projections with bio-imaging approach.
International exchange:
The student will spend 3 months in the foreign laboratory during the first and second year, 5 months during the third year, and 1 month during the fourth year of study.
Additional requirements for the student:
Previous hands-on laboratory experience in molecular biology and neurobiology would be highly beneficial. Candidates should have a recent Master degree (or equivalent) in biology, psychology or related field. Good communication skills and good working knowledge of English confirmed by internationally approved exams, e.g., CAE.
