ROLE OF TRANSCRIPTION REGULATORS IN BRAIN INFLAMMATION

Background:
Inflammatory reactions initiated by brain macrophages in the central nervous system (CNS) contribute significantly to the progression of several major neurodegenerative diseases Extrinsic signals command microglia activation under pathological conditions towards a beneficial or detrimental phenotype. Molecular mechanisms of initiation, progression and termination of acute inflammatory response in neurodegeneration, in particular regulatory gene networks and signalling pathways underlying inflammatory responses in brain macrophages are not understood. We hypothesize that global and possibly epigenetic changes in gene expression could be responsible for a maintenance of inflammation and a lack of proper termination of microglial inflammatory responses.
Aim of the study:
The central objective of this project is an application of molecular biology and computational approaches to identify basic regulatory mechanisms and signaling pathways underlying inflammatory responses in brain macrophages. In particular, project aims at validation functional roles of different STAT proteins that may provide a novel therapeutic strategy for treating inflammatory diseases.
International exchange:
The PhD student will travel twice for 4-months to work in Prof. Kettenmann’s laboratory (8 months). The PhD student will use microglial cell culture models developed in Prof. Kettenmann’s laboratory to analyse how different signals modulate transcription regulators and genetic/signaling networks underlying inflammation specific changes in gene expression in microglia.
Additional requirements for the student:
The candidate should have master degree in biological sciences, medicine, bioinformatics or applied mathematics within 2- 3 years before the call. Good command of English is required.
