INFLUENCE OF PSYCHOTOMIMETIC COMPOUNDS ON ELECTROPHYSIOLOGICAL ACTIVITY IN LIMBIC STRUCTURES

Background:
Psychotomimetic compounds are used to model certain features of schizophrenia in humans. However, mechanism of action of this family of compounds is unclear. We have shown previously that the psychomimetic compound, ketamine, can induce aberrant oscillatory activity, around 150 Hz, in limbic structures (Hunt et al., 2006). However, it is not known whether other psychotomimetic compounds can induce a similar phenomenon, nor is the function of this type of oscillatory activity understood.
Aim of the study:
To address these issues the student will examine whether the potent hallucinogen LSD can modify oscillatory activity in limbic structures and in seperate studies whether oscillatory activity is modified in the acquisition and extinction of a learned-association task.
International exchange:
During the 8 month stay in the laboratory of Prof. Rene Garcia (University of Nice, France) the student will be trained to perform the associative-learning task(s). The student will record oscillatory activity in selected limbic structures, to examine if there is a relationship between oscillatory activity and conditioning and extinction of associative learning.
Additional requirements for the student:
We will look for a PhD student who will have: Master Degree in Biology, or equivalent degree; some experience performing experiments and/or surgery on rodents; background in neurobiology; some experience in computer programming (which will be an advantage); fluent English.
